  • New structure discovered in human sperm tails

    [14 Feb 2018] A highly effective tail is needed in order for a sperm to be able to swim, and for a baby to be conceived. By using cryo-electron tomography, researchers at the University of Gothenburg - working in partnership with researchers in the USA - have identified a completely new nanostructure inside sperm tails.

  • The plastics industry is leaking huge amounts of microplastics

    [14 Feb 2018] Millions of plastic pellets are leaking out into the environment from a manufacturing site in Stenungsund. This has been shown by a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Gothenburg. Despite several international and national sets of regulatory frameworks, the leaking continues.

  • New discovery offers hope of protecting premature babies from blindness

    [9 Feb 2018] Now there is hope of a new way to protect extremely premature babies from impaired vision or blindness resulting from the eye disease retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). A study at Sahlgrenska Academy published in JAMA Ophthalmology points to a clear link between ROP and low levels of the fatty acid arachidonic acid, measured in children¿s blood.
